Do your best to make a real budget. Far too often homeowners are afraid of contractors charging more money if the contractor knows how much you really have to spend. On the flip side, contractors worry about homeowners expecting a work quality level that does not match what they are paying. Acting as if money isn't an issue won't cost you less, but it will give you less than you probably wanted. Being honest and straightforward from the projects inception will help minimize the gap between what you wanted and what you actually get.
